Sub-Zero’s warranty, in plain words

Each term counts from the day the unit was installed. Outdoor models have different terms.

Years from installation
  • Any defective part parts and labor, 2 years
  • The sealed system parts and labor, 5 years
  • Sealed-system parts only you pay the labor, to year 12

Covered by the first two? Sub-Zero’s own service network does the repair: Sub-Zero’s service locator.

Outside covered repairs, the owner pays for the work. Through year twelve, Sub-Zero’s limited sealed-system parts coverage may still apply; check your model’s terms with Sub-Zero. What each year means for the bill: premium repair cost.

The sealed system is the compressor, condenser, evaporator, drier and tubing, as listed in Sub-Zero’s warranty.

What is your Sub-Zero doing?

Tap one for the causes Sub-Zero’s own help pages name and the checks an owner can make first.

  1. The controls, and any light or code. Sub-Zero recommends 38°F.
  2. The condenser, behind the top grille on Classic models. A dusty one is on Sub-Zero’s list for a warm unit.
  3. The drain trough along the back wall: debris or ice here can cause water or frost.
  4. The ice maker and bin. Sub-Zero wants the freezer at 0°F.
  5. The door gasket. A tear lets warm air in.

Where to look on a built-in: an over-and-under with its doors open, drawn by us and simplified. The spots come from Sub-Zero’s own help pages.

Warm, in one section or all of it

Possible causes: a control set too warm, a door or gasket that isn’t sealing, a load of warm groceries, a dirty condenser, or Showroom or Sabbath mode left on. Behind those, Sub-Zero names the fan, a sensor and the sealed system.

Check first: 38°F is Sub-Zero’s recommended setting on an electronic control. Give a change 24 hours, and keep perishables cold somewhere else meanwhile: see how long food keeps. Above 48°F with the control at 38, Sub-Zero says a condenser cleaning is unlikely to bring it back.

No ice, or not enough

Possible causes: on Classic models, the freezer temperature, the water supply or its pressure, the filter, the shut-off arm, the bin, or a fill tube frozen shut.

Check first: allow 24 hours after switching it on. Sub-Zero wants a 0°F freezer (5°F at most on the display), the water valve open, the arm down and the bin seated. More on ice maker repair.

A service light, a flashing message or a code

Possible causes: an older Classic (BI) panel lights an icon when the condenser needs cleaning; on some older 600 series units, “Vacuum Condenser” means it’s running warm or inefficiently. Codes are model specific.

Check first: if the temperatures are close to normal, clean the condenser and check the door. Otherwise, text us a photo of the panel and the rating plate.

Water on the floor, frost or condensation

Possible causes: debris, water or ice in the drain trough along the back wall, or a torn gasket. Some condensation after the door has been open a while is normal, more so in a warm, humid home.

Check first: clear the drain trough and run a hand along the gasket for tears; Sub-Zero says a damaged one should be replaced.

Running all the time, or struggling in the heat

Possible causes: often none: Sub-Zero says there’s no set run time, and on models with two compressors both can run at once. The warmer the room, the more it runs.

Check first: indoor models are designed for a room between 60°F and 90°F; outside that range, Sub-Zero says no repair can fix it until the room is back in range. Worth knowing if the house sits closed up with the air conditioning off.

Cleaning the condenser

Switch the unit off at the control panel first, as Sub-Zero’s Classic steps say, then lift the grille. A vacuum or a soft brush, no chemical cleaners, fins kept straight. Wiring, controls and the sealed system are a technician’s job.

Find the rating plate: model and serial number

Every Sub-Zero has a rating plate with its model number, serial number and manufacture date. Where it sits depends on the series and the type.

Classic

Model numbers start CL, or BI on older units

Stainless-steel accents or custom panels; older units were called Built-In.

On Classic refrigerators and freezers, the plate is inside a door, at the top of the frame by the hinge.

Every Classic type
Over-and-under, or a one-door column
Open the refrigerator door, or the column’s only door. The plate is on the frame at the top, by the hinge.
Side-by-side
Open the freezer door: top of the frame, by the hinge.
French door
Open the left-hand door: top of the frame, by the hinge.
The older 600, 500, 200 and 300 series
The same places as Classic, by type.

Designer and PRO

Model numbers start DEC, DET, DEU, ID or PRO; IT, IC or IW on older units

Designer is panel ready, made to blend in with the cabinets; older units were called Integrated. PRO is stainless steel inside and out.

On Designer columns, tall units and drawers, and on PRO, the plate is inside the cabinet by a drawer. Wine and under-counter units differ.

Every Designer and PRO type
Column model numbers DEC, IC
Inside, behind the middle drawers, by the drawer guide on the side away from the hinge.
Tall and drawers model numbers DET, IT, ID, 700 series
Inside the cabinet, to the left of the upper drawer.
PRO model numbers PRO3650, PRO4850
Inside the cabinet, by the freezer drawer (the upper one on the 48-inch model).
Wine storage model numbers DET, DEC, IW
On the wall on the handle side, just below the controls.
Under-counter refrigerator or beverage center model numbers DEU
On the ceiling inside, toward the left. Other under-counter refrigerators have it in the upper left of the cabinet.
Under-counter ice maker
On the left wall inside. Some older models have it on the right.
Model numbers and other units

Reading the model number. Going by Sub-Zero’s own product names, the first two digits after the letters give the width in inches: CL3650U is the 36-inch Classic over-and-under, DEC3050R a 30-inch Designer column. That’s a pattern in the names, not a decoder Sub-Zero publishes; the plate itself is the sure answer.

For older wine and under-counter models, and anything not shown here, see Sub-Zero’s serial tag page. If the unit is connected to the Sub-Zero Group Owner’s App, the serial number is in the app as well.

Text us a photo of the rating plate

Send it with a line about what your Sub-Zero is doing, and whether one section or the whole unit is warm. With the model and serial number, we know which unit we’re dealing with before the visit.

Will a repair by an independent company affect my Sub-Zero warranty?

Sub-Zero’s warranty sends covered repairs to its own service network: any defect for two years from installation, the sealed system for five. For those, use Sub-Zero. To year twelve it still supplies covered sealed-system parts when someone else does the work, and it excludes any defect caused by improper service or repair. Beaver Appliance is independent, not affiliated with Sub-Zero; read Sub-Zero’s warranty for your model.

How can I tell if my Sub-Zero is still under warranty?

Count from the day it was installed: two years on any defective part, five on the sealed system, and twelve on sealed-system parts only, with the owner paying labor. For warranty service Sub-Zero asks for the model and serial number from the rating plate. Outdoor models differ.

Why has my Sub-Zero ice maker stopped making ice?

Start with Sub-Zero’s Classic checks: wait 24 hours after switching it on, keep the freezer at 0°F (5°F at most on the display), and check that the water valve is open, the shut-off arm is down and the bin is seated. Past those, the fault needs a diagnosis.

How often should the condenser on a Sub-Zero be cleaned?

Sub-Zero’s own pages differ: every 6 to 12 months on its condenser cleaning page (more often with pets), every 3 to 6 months on its yearly maintenance page. Check the guidance for your model. A unit under 6 months old doesn’t need it yet.

Is an older Sub-Zero worth repairing?

It depends on the fault and the price. Sub-Zero says its refrigerators are tested to handle at least 20 years of everyday use, and Consumer Reports’ 2014 rule of thumb keeps a repair under half the price of a new product. Beaver Appliance’s diagnosis ends in a written price, so you can weigh the two.

What happens if the fault is in a Sub-Zero’s sealed system?

The sealed system is the closed circuit of compressor, condenser, evaporator, drier and tubing. If the diagnosis points there, Beaver Appliance explains what it means for your unit and, from its installation date, whether Sub-Zero’s five-year or twelve-year terms may still apply.

Do you repair Sub-Zero under-counter units, such as wine units and beverage centers?

Yes: Beaver Appliance repairs Sub-Zero under-counter wine units, beverage centers and ice makers, along with built-in and column refrigerators and freezers. On under-counter models the rating plate is usually inside, on the ceiling or the left wall, and a photo of it tells us which model we’re working on.
