What is your washer doing?

Tap a symptom for what can cause it and what to check first. The visit finds the actual fault.

  1. Hot and cold valves feed water through the inlet hoses.
  2. It runs through the detergent drawer into the drum.
  3. The door stays locked while there’s water, heat or spin, and its seal holds the water in.
  4. Draining, it passes a filter that catches lint and small items, then the pump.
  5. The hose empties into a standpipe, loose, with a gap for air.

Solid: water in. Dashed: water out; the spin waits for it, Samsung says. After Whirlpool and Samsung; drawn by us, simplified.

Water left in the drum

Possible causes: a kinked or blocked drain hose, a clogged pump filter on a front-loader, or so many suds the pump stops, Whirlpool says. Past those, the pump itself.

Check first: the hose, which Whirlpool says needs a gap for air and no tape at the drainpipe. Then the filter, if yours has one: where it is by brand.

Clothes come out soaking wet

Possible causes: a washer that can’t drain never reaches its spin, Samsung explains. A lopsided or overloaded load stops it too, and gentle cycles spin slowly on purpose.

Check first: take a few heavy items out and run a spin on its own.

Water on the floor

Possible causes: a hose or its connection at either end, the door seal of a front-loader (Samsung says one caught hair can do it), or too many suds.

Check first: both hoses and the fold of the seal. Drips when a front-loader’s door opens are normal, Samsung says. If water keeps coming, close the valves behind the washer.

It stops partway through a cycle

Possible causes: suds that stop the pump, an unbalanced load that pauses the spin, or a drain problem. On some Whirlpool models an error code locks the door and controls.

Check first: look for a code on the display and text us a photo of it; codes differ by brand and model.

It shakes, bangs or walks

Possible causes: a washer that isn’t level, an unbalanced load, or, on a new install, shipping bolts still in place, LG says.

Check first: press on opposite corners to see if it rocks, and adjust the feet until it sits firm. LG suggests loading the tub to about two-thirds of its capacity.

A musty smell

Possible causes: residue and damp in the door seal and drum, from too much detergent or softener, or wet laundry left inside. A sewage smell means the drain hose may sit too deep in the standpipe, Samsung says.

Check first: wipe out the folds of the seal and run the cleaning cycle.

The door stays locked

Possible causes: the door stays locked while there’s water, heat, tumbling or spinning inside, Whirlpool says, so a locked door with water behind it usually points back to draining.

Check first: on Whirlpool models, press Pause/Cancel twice; it can take up to five minutes to unlock.

Before you open anything

Unplug the washer first, as Whirlpool says, and after a hot cycle give the water about an hour to cool, Samsung says. The pump, motor and wiring are a technician’s job.

Text us the model sticker first

On a front-loader it’s usually on the rim of the door opening; on a top-loader, under the lid on the tub rim, Whirlpool says. Some Samsung washers have it on the back. Text a photo and a word about what’s wrong.

The hoses, and the floor below

A failed supply hose can let out an average of 650 gallons of water an hour, State Farm said in 2021.

  • Replace them on time

After 5 years of use, Whirlpool says. The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety and State Farm say every 3 to 5 years, and suggest braided steel.

  • Upstairs? Add a drain pan

The institute advises one under the washer, especially when the laundry room is on an upper floor.

  • Going away? Close the valves

Turn off the water to the washer, Whirlpool and State Farm both say.

Why won’t my washing machine drain or spin?

The two are linked: a washer that can’t drain never moves on to its spin, Samsung explains. The common culprits are a kinked or blocked drain hose, a clogged filter on a front-loader and too much detergent. If a test cycle still won’t drain, Samsung advises service.

Where is the drain filter on my washer?

On front-loaders, usually behind a small panel low on the front, but the spot varies by brand. Samsung puts it near the bottom, LG in the lower front (on the right on some models), and Whirlpool at the front bottom or behind the pedestal drawer. Samsung says its top-loaders have none. Unplug the washer and have a towel and a shallow pan ready. How often: Samsung says monthly or about every 40 washes, LG monthly, Whirlpool every few months.

How do I keep a front-load washer from smelling?

Run the cleaning cycle about once a month or as your manual says (Whirlpool, Samsung and LG each give an interval), use HE detergent only and take wet laundry out promptly, as Whirlpool advises. Leaving the door ajar helps it dry, ENERGY STAR says, but Consumer Reports advises keeping it closed when young children are in the house.

How much does washing machine repair cost?

It depends on what has failed, so Beaver Appliance finds that first, for one flat diagnostic fee that is credited to the repair if you go ahead. You get the repair price in writing, nothing is repaired until you say yes, and every repair comes with a written warranty.

Is it worth repairing a washing machine?

It depends on its age. Consumer Reports puts a washer’s average life close to 10 years and calls one 4 to 7 years old the hard decision; in its 2025 member survey only 13 percent broke down in years two to five. In 2014 its rule of thumb was to stop at half the price of a new machine. Our written price gives you the figure to weigh.

Do you repair stacked washers and laundry centers?

Yes. Beaver Appliance repairs stacked washer and dryer pairs and laundry centers, as well as front-load and top-load washers. When you get in touch, say whether yours is stacked or sits in a closet.
