What is your dryer doing?

Tap a symptom for its possible causes and the first thing to check. The visit finds the actual fault.

  1. Room air is drawn in.
  2. A heater warms it: an element in an electric dryer, a burner in a gas one, Samsung explains.
  3. It moves through the tumbling clothes and picks up their moisture.
  4. It leaves through the lint screen, which Samsung calls the first place moisture can get blocked.
  5. The blower pushes it out through the duct to the vent outside.

Solid: room air in, then warmed. Dashed: moist air out. After Samsung and ENERGY STAR; drawn by us, simplified.

It runs, but there’s no heat

Possible causes: an electric dryer is fed by two breakers; with one tripped, the drum can still turn while the heater gets nothing, Whirlpool and Samsung explain. Some cycles add little or no heat on purpose, such as Air Only (Whirlpool) or Eco Dry (Samsung). Whirlpool adds that a gas dryer with its shutoff valve closed turns but won’t heat. Past those, the heating parts or a safety fuse, which Samsung says needs a professional.

Check first: both breakers (Samsung says off for 30 seconds, then on), then a timed cycle with Eco Dry off.

It takes too long to dry

Possible causes: moisture that can’t get out, which Samsung calls the most common reason: a clogged lint screen first, then the duct to the outside. Loads that arrive soaking wet take longer too, and can mean the washer isn’t spinning.

Check first: clean the screen, then feel for air at the outside hood while the dryer runs. Weak air there usually means a blocked duct, GE says, and that is a job for our dryer vent cleaning.

It won’t start

Possible causes: a door that isn’t fully shut, Child Lock (on Samsung dryers it stops the Start button), or the power supply.

Check first: Samsung’s test is to choose Time Dry, then touch and hold Start. Burn marks on the plug, cord or outlet, or a breaker that keeps tripping, are a job for an electrician, Samsung says; switch the breaker off before you touch the cord.

It runs, but the drum won’t turn

Possible causes: on Samsung dryers, Child Lock can stop the drum. Otherwise, one of the drive parts that turn it.

Check first: Child Lock. If that’s not it, text us; the visit finds which part has failed.

It squeals, thumps or rattles

Possible causes: a load that’s too heavy, which Samsung says is behind most squealing and grinding; sneakers, a sheet balled up, pocket items or a dryer that isn’t level, Whirlpool says. A steady hum is the blower and normal (Samsung).

Check first: run it with about four wet towels. A squeal that stays with that load, or a thump with the drum empty, means service, Samsung says.

It stops early, or runs hot

Possible causes: dryer-sheet residue on the two metal sensor bars inside the front of the drum can end a cycle while clothes are still damp, Samsung says. A dryer that’s hot to the touch is a vent sign, GE says, and when air can’t get out, safety devices cut the heat, the manufacturers’ association told the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in 2004.

Check first: wipe the bars with a soft cloth and a drop of dish soap. Never run it with the lint screen loose, damaged or missing, Whirlpool says.

If you smell gas

“Leave the house immediately. Do not use the telephone inside the house; go outside to call your gas supplier for assistance. Do not light a match. Do not turn off/on a light.” That’s the Florida Public Service Commission’s advice. Florida City Gas adds: never try to find the leak yourself, and once you’re in a safe place, call 911 and your gas company. For a burning smell, see what to do.

Where the lint goes

Some gets past even a clean screen. In 2003, CPSC staff found lint building up inside dryers installed as their makers say, with the screen cleaned between loads.

  • The screen, after every load

ENERGY STAR’s advice. Pull the lint off dry: wet lint is hard to remove, Whirlpool says.

  • A wash when residue builds

Detergent and softener leave a film. Whirlpool says to scrub the screen with a nylon brush every six months, or sooner if it clogs; ENERGY STAR says regularly if you use dryer sheets.

  • The duct to the outside

Lint collects there too, more on long runs with many bends, the U.S. Fire Administration notes. Our vent cleaning covers the duct run to the outside, with airflow checked before and after.

Why is my dryer running but not heating?

On an electric dryer, check first that neither of its two breakers has tripped: with one off, the drum turns but the heater doesn’t, Whirlpool and Samsung explain. Some cycles add little or no heat on purpose, such as Whirlpool’s Air Only or Samsung’s Eco Dry. On a gas dryer, Whirlpool says a closed shutoff valve stops the heat while the drum still turns. If a timed cycle with Eco Dry off still runs cold, Samsung advises service.

Is it my dryer or my dryer vent?

Feel the outside hood while the dryer runs. Weak air there usually points to a blocked duct, GE says. Strong air with the clothes still cold points to the dryer itself. Beaver Appliance repairs dryers and cleans dryer vents, so tell us what you noticed when you call or text.

Why does my dryer stop before the clothes are dry?

Often the moisture sensor: two metal bars inside the front of the drum that dryer-sheet residue can coat, Samsung says, so the dryer thinks the load is dry. Wipe them with a soft cloth and a drop of dish soap. Some LG dryers also shut down on purpose when the vent is badly blocked, LG says.

Is it normal for a dryer to thump when it starts?

After a dryer sits unused, a light thump in the first few minutes is normal, Whirlpool says: the drum’s support rollers can flatten. A thump with the drum empty is different; Samsung says to request service.

Is a dryer worth repairing?

It depends on its age and the price. The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) put a dryer’s life at about 13 years in 2007, and Consumer Reports’ 2014 rule of thumb was to stop repairing at half the price of a new one. Before deciding, Consumer Reports suggests cleaning the lint screen and checking the outside duct for airflow. Our written price gives you the number to compare.

How is a dryer repair priced?

By the fault, so Beaver Appliance’s first step is finding it for one flat diagnostic fee, which is credited to the repair if you go ahead. The repair price then comes to you in writing, the work waits for your yes, and the repair carries a written warranty.
