What is your dishwasher doing?
Tap a symptom to see what can cause it and the checks the makers suggest first. Pinning down the real fault is what the visit is for.
- Hot water comes in through the inlet valve; a float tells it when to stop filling, GE says.
- A pump drives it up through the spray arms.
- It falls back through the filter, which keeps food out of the pump.
- At the end, a drain pump pushes it out through the hose.
- The hose rises in a high loop, or runs to an air gap, so sink water can’t flow back in.
Solid arrows: clean water in and spraying. Dashed: draining out. How most built-ins fill, wash and drain, after Whirlpool and GE; drawn by us, simplified.
Won’t drain, or water stands in the bottom
Possible causes: food clogging the filter or the pump, the most common reason, Bosch says, or a kinked hose, a blocked disposal or sink connection or a jammed drain pump (Whirlpool).
Check first: a cup or two of water in the bottom is normal, GE says. More? Clean the filter and run the disposal. If the sink won’t drain either, Samsung says it’s the home’s plumbing. New install? See three install faults.
Dishes come out dirty, gritty or spotted
Possible causes: water too cool to dissolve the detergent: GE says it should come in at 120°F or more. Also a dirty filter, blocked spray arm holes, hard water or the wrong detergent.
Check first: run the kitchen tap hot before you start, as GE suggests, and use rinse aid. A paper clip clears a blocked spray arm hole.
Dishes still wet at the end
Possible causes: no rinse aid, one of the most frequent reasons, KitchenAid says, or an Eco or quick cycle. Plastics hold droplets in any dishwasher.
Check first: fill the rinse aid and unload the bottom rack first, as GE advises. If it doesn’t heat at all, KitchenAid says to arrange service.
Water on the floor
Possible causes: Whirlpool reads it by where it shows. At the door, often the gasket or too many suds; under the front, the pump seal or an overfill; from behind, a hose, the inlet valve or the drain line.
Check first: use only dishwasher detergent and wipe up spilled rinse aid; both make suds, GE says. Still leaking? Switch off the breaker and close the supply valve.
Won’t start, or won’t fill
Possible causes: often a setting, GE says: control lock, delay start, demo or sleep mode, or a door not fully latched. A stuck float can stop it filling.
Check first: latch the door firmly and check the controls for a lock or a delay. On many newer GE models the float lifts out, so you can see it isn’t bent.
It smells
Possible causes: food in the filter, the tub or the spray arms. Dirty water sitting in it between uses is an installation problem, GE says: the hose needs an air gap or a high loop.
Check first: clean the filter and the tub bottom, then run it empty with a full cup of detergent, as GE suggests.
Before you reach in
Switch it off at the breaker, not just its buttons, Whirlpool says, and never put a hand into the disposal (GE). A burning smell, damaged wiring or a breaker that keeps tripping is a technician’s job.

Text us the model sticker first
Open the door and look along its edges: GE puts the sticker on the tub’s front inside edge or the side of the door, Whirlpool on the left side of the tub frame. A panel-ready model has it inside too. Send it with a line about the problem.
Text a photo to (754) 285-8880Won’t drain since a new install?
Three drain faults that come from the install, not the dishwasher itself, as GE, Whirlpool and Samsung describe them.
The disposal’s knockout plug
A new disposal’s dishwasher inlet is closed with a plug that has to be tapped out, InSinkErator says; left in, it blocks drainage completely (Whirlpool).
A hose pinched under the dishwasher
Right after an install, the most common drain fault is a dishwasher sitting on its own drain hose, pinching it shut, Samsung says.
No high loop or air gap
Without one, dirty sink water can flow into the dishwasher, GE says. It calls the air gap part of the plumbing and says a leaking one may need a plumber.

Can I pour drain cleaner into a dishwasher that won’t drain?
No. GE says chemical drain cleaners should never be used in a dishwasher, for any reason. Clean the filter, run the disposal and check the hose under the sink for a kink; water still standing after that needs a look at the pump or the drain.
How often should I clean my dishwasher filter?
It depends on the brand, so check your manual. Whirlpool says about once a month, or every two weeks with daily use; GE says every other month or more often. Rinse it in warm soapy water: GE warns that scouring pads or brushes can damage its filters.
Why does my dishwasher hum but not drain?
A steady hum with no water moving points to a jammed impeller or something stuck in the pump, Whirlpool says. If a clean filter doesn’t change it, the pump needs a technician.
What does an error code on my dishwasher mean?
Codes differ by brand and model, so text us the code with a photo of the model sticker. GE says most fault codes need a technician, though switching the power off for a minute or two sometimes clears one.
Is a broken dishwasher worth repairing?
Not always. Consumer Reports wrote in January 2024: “With dishwashers, the data typically leans toward replacement.” A 2007 study by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) put their life at about 9 years. Check the warranty and any recall first; then our written price lets you weigh the repair against a new one before you say yes.
How much does a dishwasher repair cost?
It depends on what failed, so Beaver Appliance diagnoses it first, for one flat fee credited to the repair if you go ahead. The repair price comes in writing, nothing is done until you say yes, and the repair carries a written warranty.
