What is your oven or cooktop doing?
Tap a symptom for what can cause it and what you can check safely. The visit finds the actual fault.
- Oven: the bake element heats from the floor; a hidden one takes longer to preheat, GE says.
- The broil element heats from the top.
- Electric cooktop: an element under the glass, or a coil on top, heats the pan. On glass, GE says flat-bottomed pans are essential.
- Induction: a coil under the glass makes a magnetic field when current flows, ENERGY STAR explains.
- The field warms a magnetic pan from within, so the heat starts in the pan, not the glass.
How an oven and two kinds of cooktop heat. After GE, Samsung and ENERGY STAR; drawn by us, simplified.
The oven won’t heat, or heats slowly
Possible causes: slow preheating can be normal (GE’s times). Otherwise a control set wrong, a cracked element, or a fault Consumer Reports counts as a job for a pro.
Check first: that it’s set to Bake or Broil and, on ovens with a self-clean latch, that the latch is open (GE). With the breaker off, look at the bake element for cracks or breaks.
It bakes unevenly, or runs hot or cool
Possible causes: often not a fault. A new oven may simply cook faster or slower than the old one, KitchenAid says, and GE says it’s likely the more accurate of the two. Pans, rack position and foil on the floor or racks change results too (GE).
Check first: GE’s biscuit test, or a good oven thermometer. Many ovens let you adjust the temperature in their settings; the steps differ by model.
A burner won’t light, or keeps clicking
Possible causes: on gas cooktops, GE and Whirlpool point to moisture after cleaning or a spill, a knob not fully off, a cap on the wrong burner, or clogged ports. Several burners clicking while one lights is normal, GE says.
Check first: let it dry for a few hours (GE), seat each cap on its own burner, and turn the knob fully off until it pops out. For a gas burner, call or text us before you book. Any smell of gas: these steps come first.
An element stays cold
Possible causes: the coil or its connection, on a coil top; GE’s test is to swap it into another socket of the same size. If one element on a glass top stays cold while the rest work, Samsung says to request service.
Check first: the breaker, then GE’s swap test with the power off. Don’t cook on cracked glass: GE warns spills can get in and cause a shock.
The induction cooktop won’t see the pan
Possible causes: usually the pan. Induction needs magnetic cookware, cast iron or magnetic stainless, sized to the zone and centered, and it switches off under an empty pan, Samsung says.
Check first: hold a magnet to the bottom of the pan (Samsung); copper, glass and aluminum won’t work. Then boil some water on that zone.
The door stays locked after self-clean
Possible causes: the oven is still cooling. Whirlpool’s cycle includes a 30-minute cool-down, and GE says older latches can take 30 to 90 minutes.
Check first: GE’s reset is to cut the power for 30 seconds, then restore it. Never force the latch, GE says.
If you smell gas
“Leave the house immediately. Do not use the telephone inside the house; go outside to call your gas supplier for assistance. Do not light a match. Do not turn off/on a light.” That’s the Florida Public Service Commission’s advice. Florida City Gas adds: never try to find the leak yourself, and once you’re in a safe place, call 911 and your gas company.

Text us the model sticker first
Open the oven door and check the frame around the opening, or the storage drawer’s frame, GE and Whirlpool say. A cooktop’s is usually underneath, so a photo of the manual helps. Text it with a word about what’s wrong.
Text a photo to (754) 285-8880Moved the range lately? Check the anti-tip bracket.
Staff at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) knew of 38 deaths from ranges tipping over between 1980 and 2008; 20 were children aged one to five.
What it does
An anti-tip bracket holds the range down when weight goes on an open oven door, GE says. The safety standard has called for one from 1991 on, CPSC says, but it takes care to fit and can be left off.
GE’s check
Clear the top and the oven, then carefully pull the range from the back. With the bracket in place, it won’t tip more than 4 inches from the wall. Don’t tip it further.
Which ranges
Freestanding, slide-in and drop-in ranges; wall ovens and cooktops are built in.

My oven takes a long time to preheat. Is it broken?
Not necessarily. GE’s typical preheat times are 15 to 20 minutes for ovens with a hidden bake element and for gas ovens, and 5 to 10 minutes for ovens with a visible element. An electric oven that takes much longer, or never gets to temperature, is worth a diagnosis; for a gas oven, call or text us before you book.
Is it safe to run my oven’s self-clean cycle?
Whirlpool: move pet birds to another closed, well-ventilated room, as the fumes can kill some; ventilate the kitchen; take out racks, pans and foil; leave the door gasket alone. GE: don’t run it if the clock isn’t working properly or the lamp cover is missing.
My oven shows an error code. What should I do?
Text us a photo of the display: codes mean different things by brand and model. GE says switching the breaker off for a minute or two sometimes clears one, and recommends keeping the range or wall oven off at the breaker until it’s serviced, switching it back on only to use the surface units.
Is it worth repairing an oven or range?
Usually, by Consumer Reports’ account, updated January 2024: its data tends to point to repairing a range, and for pro-style models “it almost always pays to make a repair.” Check for a warranty or a recall first, it adds. A 2007 study by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) put electric ranges at about 13 years and gas at 15.
Is it normal for an oven to click while it bakes?
On GE ovens, yes: GE says the clicks are the control relays switching the bake and broil elements on and off. A gas burner that keeps clicking is different: GE and Whirlpool point to moisture after cleaning or a spill, a knob not fully off or a cap on the wrong burner.
What does an oven or stove repair cost?
That comes down to the part that failed, which Beaver Appliance finds first for one flat diagnostic fee, credited if you go ahead. You then get the price in writing; nothing is repaired until you agree, and each repair has a written warranty.
