What is your freezer doing?

Open a row for possible causes and the checks GE, Whirlpool and Frigidaire give owners; the drawing shows how each type deals with frost.

  1. Frost forms on a chest freezer’s inside walls, faster when the lid stays open.
  2. Most chest freezers are defrosted by hand, with no drain tube or drip pan; the water leaves through a plug at the bottom front.
  3. A frost-free upright makes its cold at coils behind the back panel; a fan moves the air.
  4. A heater melts the frost off the coils by itself, every 8 to 15 hours on a GE timer model.
  5. The melt water drains to a pan underneath and evaporates.

Left, a manual-defrost chest freezer; right, a frost-free upright. After Whirlpool and GE; drawn by us, simplified.

Running, but not freezing

Possible causes: a control turned down, a lid that isn’t sealing, a big load of unfrozen food or frost choking the airflow. Past those, GE lists the defrost control, a relay, wiring and the compressor.

Check first: Frigidaire suggests 0°F, and service if it’s still warm after 24 hours running. Move the food to a cooler or another freezer meanwhile: see how long it keeps.

Frost or ice building up

Possible causes: some frost is normal in a manual-defrost chest freezer; an open lid lets in the moist air that makes it, Whirlpool says. In a frost-free upright, thick frost can mean a leaky seal or a stopped defrost system.

Check first: shut the lid on a dollar bill. If it slides out with almost no tension, Whirlpool says the seal may not be sealing.

Running all the time

Possible causes: often nothing. GE designs its compressors to run 80 to 90 percent of the time, and longer in heat or when the door opens a lot.

Check first: the door shut tight and the control at 0°F, not colder, as Frigidaire advises, and the freezer at least 3/4 full, as GE does. In a garage, see the chart below.

Water under or around it

Possible causes: GE says its chest freezers have no drip pan, so water comes from defrosting, a drain plug left out or condensation in humid air. A frost-free upright drains to a pan underneath, and a blocked drain can leave water or ice.

Check first: the drain plug back in after a defrost, and the lid fully closed.

The lid or door won’t close or seal

Possible causes: packages or baskets in the way, heavy frost, a cabinet that isn’t level or a cracked, brittle seal, Whirlpool says.

Check first: rearrange what’s inside, level it and defrost if frost is in the way. A cracked seal is worth a diagnosis.

New or loud noises

Possible causes: GE calls gurgling, knocking and popping normal while a freezer cools, and sizzling during an automatic defrost. A manual-defrost freezer shouldn’t sizzle.

Check first: note when it happens. A sound you haven’t heard from it before is worth a diagnosis.

Not running at all, no light

Possible causes: the control at OFF, a tripped breaker or GFI outlet, a loose plug or a power cut, Frigidaire says.

Check first: reset the breaker or outlet and plug straight into the wall, never into an extension cord.

Before you start

Unplug the freezer before you defrost or clean it, as GE and Whirlpool both say. Anything behind a panel, from wiring to the sealed system, is a technician’s work.

On an upright, look on an inside wall near the top; on a chest freezer, inside the lid, on an inside wall or on an outside side wall. A photo and one line about the problem is enough.

Can a freezer go in a hot garage?

It depends on the maker: GE rates its 2018 and newer chest and upright freezers for rooms from 0 to 110°F, while Sub-Zero allows 60 to 90°F for its indoor built-ins.

Room temperatures each maker allows, in °F. Your model’s installation instructions decide.
  • GE chest and upright, 2018 and newer 0 to 110°F
  • Whirlpool chest and upright (one Whirlpool page says 32°F) 40 to 110°F
  • Sub-Zero built-ins, indoor models 60 to 90°F
  • Dry, shaded, with air around it. GE asks for 2 to 3 inches each side and behind a chest model, and never a closet.
  • Longer running is normal. GE says a freezer may run continuously in extreme heat; ENERGY STAR says extreme temperatures are hard on the compressor and can shorten its life.
  • More frost in humid air. Whirlpool says it may need defrosting more often.

Freezer repair questions

Why is my freezer running but not freezing?

Frigidaire and Whirlpool start with the control near 0°F, a lid or door that seals, a modest load of unfrozen food and no heavy frost. Still warm after a day of running? GE lists faults behind the panels, from the defrost control to the compressor, and finding which one is the diagnosis.

Is some frost normal in a chest freezer?

On a manual-defrost model, yes. Whirlpool says to defrost it once the frost is about 1/4 inch thick, and fully at least once a year. A frost-free freezer is different: GE says ice shouldn’t build up on its walls, so heavy frost there points to the seal or the defrost system.

How do I defrost a chest freezer safely?

As GE and Whirlpool describe it: control off and plug out, the food into a cooler, the drain plug pulled at the bottom front over a pan, and the lid open. Whirlpool rules out hair dryers, heaters, ice picks and knives; GE allows pans of hot water inside. Dry it, refit the plug and switch it on.

My freezer stopped. How long will the food stay frozen?

With the door shut, the USDA says a full freezer holds its temperature for about 48 hours and a half-full one about 24. Food that still has ice crystals, or is at 40°F or below, can be refrozen, FoodSafety.gov says, though quality may suffer.

Is an older freezer worth repairing?

Weigh its age against the price of the fix. A 2007 National Association of Home Builders study put freezers at about 11 years; Consumer Reports’ general rule from 2014 caps a repair at half the price of a new product. Retiring a very old chest freezer? The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warned in 2000 that one whose lid opens only by the handle can trap a child.

What does a freezer repair cost?

Beaver Appliance prices it by the fault, found first for one flat diagnostic fee that is credited to the repair if you go ahead. Then the price in writing, no work until you approve it, and a written warranty on every repair.

What does it mean if my freezer’s compressor has failed?

The compressor is part of the sealed system, the closed loop that carries the refrigerant. A diagnosis can find a fault there, and Beaver Appliance explains what it means and your options, given the freezer’s age. Still under the manufacturer’s warranty? Start with the manufacturer.
