What is your refrigerator doing?
Tap one for its possible causes and the checks manufacturers say an owner can make first. Finding the real fault is the visit’s job. Not cooling at all? Run the six owner checks first.
- Cold air is made at the freezer’s coils, behind its back panel.
- A fan sends it up a channel at the back.
- A damper lets it into the fridge through vents.
- Food against a vent blocks it: the fridge warms, the freezer stays cold.
Solid arrows: cold air. Dashed: air going back to the coils. Settings as GE and Frigidaire suggest. How most refrigerators cool the fridge side, after KitchenAid and GE; drawn by us, simplified.
Warm in the fridge, cold in the freezer
Possible causes: food pushed against the vents. Past that, the fan or the damper behind the panels.
Check first: keep food about 2 inches clear of the vents, as Samsung advises, and give it 24 hours. Keep perishables cold somewhere else meanwhile: see how long food keeps.
Not cold anywhere, but the light is on
Possible causes: a control turned down or off, demo mode (lights on, no cooling), or a defrost cycle, which can pause cooling for 30 to 45 minutes, GE says.
Check first: look for demo or showroom mode and set the controls. Still warm a day later? GE says it may be time for service. Keep perishables cold somewhere else meanwhile: see how long food keeps.
Water inside or on the floor
Possible causes: a blocked defrost drain, a water valve or ice maker line that leaks, or a filter that isn’t seated, GE and Whirlpool say.
Check first: reseat the water filter. If water keeps coming, close the supply valve (usually under the sink) and switch the ice maker off.
Frost or ice building up in the freezer
Possible causes: a door held ajar, a torn or loose gasket, or a freezer fan that isn’t running. GE says a frost-free freezer shouldn’t ice up.
Check first: make sure nothing holds the door open and that the doors swing shut on their own.
Clicking, buzzing or running all the time
Possible causes: many sounds are normal, GE says: clicks, a sizzle during defrost, long run times in heat and humidity. A buzz every 15 minutes can be an ice maker that’s on with no water.
Check first: switch the ice maker off or turn its water on, and level the refrigerator. Any other sound is worth a diagnosis.
No ice
Possible causes: the water supply (one of the most frequent, Whirlpool says), an ice maker that’s off, a full bin, or a freezer that isn’t cold enough.
Check first: ice maker on, supply valve open, line not kinked, filter under 6 months old. More on ice maker repair.
The door won’t seal, or frost forms along the edge
Possible causes: a dirty, loose or torn gasket, or a refrigerator that isn’t level, so the doors don’t meet the cabinet squarely.
Check first: close the door on a dollar bill and pull it out. You should feel it drag, Frigidaire says. Clean the gasket with warm soapy water.
Before you check anything
Unplug it before you clean or touch anything behind a panel, as GE says. Wiring, controls and the sealed system are a technician’s job.

Text us the model sticker first
On most refrigerators it’s inside the fresh-food section: on a side wall, the ceiling or under the crisper drawers. Send a photo with a line about what it’s doing.

The USDA says a refrigerator keeps food safe for up to 4 hours without power, a full freezer about 48 and a half-full one about 24, with the doors kept closed.
Not a power cut? The 4-hour figure assumes the refrigerator was cold when the power went off; one already warm may have used that time up. Many perishables have to go after more than 2 hours at 40°F or above, FoodSafety.gov says, and its food safety chart lists what to throw out.

Why is my refrigerator warm when the freezer is still cold?
Usually the cold air made on the freezer side isn’t reaching the fridge: food against the vents, or the fan or damper behind the panel, as KitchenAid and GE explain. Clear the vents and give it a day, keeping perishables cold somewhere else meanwhile: many have to go after more than 2 hours at 40°F or above, FoodSafety.gov says.
Why is my refrigerator leaking water?
GE and Whirlpool point to three usual sources: a blocked defrost drain, a leaking water valve or ice maker line, and a water filter that isn’t seated. If the water keeps coming, shut off the supply valve until it’s looked at.
What can I check myself before booking a refrigerator repair?
The power, the controls, demo mode, the vents and the door seal. GE and Frigidaire suggest 37°F for the fridge and 0°F for the freezer. After a change, wait 24 hours, keeping perishables cold somewhere else meanwhile. Unplug it before cleaning anything.
How long does food stay safe during a power outage?
Up to 4 hours in a closed refrigerator, and about 48 hours in a full freezer or 24 in a half-full one, the USDA says. For a longer outage, move perishables into a cooler with enough ice. A refrigerator that was already warm may have used that time up: FoodSafety.gov’s chart lists what to throw out.
My refrigerator stopped after a power outage. Is it broken?
Not necessarily. GE says 3 to 5 minutes of clicking after an outage can be the compressor restarting, and KitchenAid says some models have to be switched back on. Still not cooling once it has had time? Call or text us, and keep perishables cold somewhere else meanwhile: many have to go after more than 2 hours at 40°F or above, FoodSafety.gov says.
How much does a refrigerator repair cost?
It depends on the fault, so Beaver Appliance finds the fault first. You pay one flat diagnostic fee, credited to the repair if you go ahead, and get the repair price in writing. Nothing is repaired until you say yes, and every repair has a written warranty. For built-ins, see what sets the price.
Should I repair or replace an older refrigerator?
Repair, often. Consumer Reports said in January 2024 that repairing a refrigerator often makes economic sense even 10 years in, except budget top-freezers and side-by-sides. Its rule of thumb from 2014: don’t spend more than 50 percent of the price of a new one. Our diagnosis gives you a written price to weigh against both. Our repair or replace guide sets out five questions to settle it.
What happens if the fault is the compressor or the refrigerant?
That is a sealed-system fault: the closed circuit of compressor, coils and tubing that carries the refrigerant. Beaver Appliance explains what the diagnosis means and what your choices are, with the refrigerator’s age in mind. Still under the manufacturer’s warranty? Start there.
