Signs a dryer vent may be clogged
Damp clothes, or a dryer hot to the touch
A full lint screen or a blocked duct can do it, CPSC says. Clean the screen before or after every load.
A crushed or foil hose behind the dryer
Foil and plastic hoses kink and trap lint more easily, CPSC says. GE and Whirlpool say it should be metal.
A long duct, or many bends
Lint gathers there more easily, the U.S. Fire Administration says. It’s out of sight, so check the hood.
The flap outside stays shut, or the air is weak
With the dryer running, the flap should open and you should feel air. If not, the vent may be blocked, CPSC says. Strong air but slow drying? Ask about dryer repair. Vent on a roof or a shared duct? Call us instead.
Smell burning? Stop the dryer until the vent and the dryer have been checked. Smoke, flames or a smell of gas: get everyone out, then call 911.
What a vent cleaning covers

Airflow checked
Before we start.
The full duct run cleaned
From the dryer to where it vents outside, or to the shared riser in a building that has one.
Airflow checked again
When we finish.
Cleaning, not duct repair. We don’t reroute ducts, cut new openings in walls or roofs, add booster fans, or replace or install ductwork.
Text us about your vent
For a price on your vent, tell us whether it’s a house or a condo unit, and where the vent comes out if you know. A photo of the hood outside or the hose behind the dryer helps.

12 months
Once a year, say NFPA and the U.S. Fire Administration.
12 to 24 months
Every 1 to 2 years, says Whirlpool, by how much the dryer runs.
Sooner
When clothes take longer than normal to dry, NFPA adds.
Some condo associations set their own schedule. Book a vent cleaning
Dryer vents in condo buildings
Many mid- and high-rise condo buildings in Florida have a dryer riser, a shared duct that runs up the building, says the Florida Community Association Journal. Which parts the owner looks after depends on each building’s documents. In a building with a shared riser, the run we clean ends where your unit’s duct joins it.

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned in South Florida?
Once a year, the same as anywhere else: that is the advice of both NFPA and the U.S. Fire Administration, and NFPA adds that slower drying is a reason to clean sooner. Whirlpool’s guidance allows up to two years, depending on use. In a condo building, check your association’s rules too.
Can a clogged dryer vent cause a fire?
Yes. CPSC warns that lint building up in the dryer or the duct can block the air, cause excessive heat and start a fire in some dryers. In NFPA’s Home Dryer Fires report (June 2020), failure to clean was the leading factor, behind 32 percent of the home dryer fires reported to U.S. fire departments from 2014 to 2018.
Why does my dryer need two cycles to dry a load?
A blocked lint screen or exhaust duct can do it, CPSC says, though a fault in the dryer itself can slow drying too. Feeling for strong air at the outside hood while the dryer runs helps tell the two apart. If the dryer is the cause, Beaver Appliance repairs dryers as well.
What does your dryer vent cleaning include?
Beaver Appliance cleans the full duct run and checks the airflow before and after. In a condo building with a shared riser, the run ends where your unit’s duct joins it. For anything else, such as a vent that comes out on the roof, call or text us before you book.
Do you reroute or replace dryer vents, or add booster fans?
No. Beaver Appliance’s dryer vent service is cleaning only: no rerouted ducts, new wall or roof openings, booster fans, or new or replaced ductwork. A cleaning covers the duct run to the outside, or to a shared riser, with the airflow checked before and after.
Can I clean the dryer vent myself?
Part of it. Clean the lint screen before or after every load, clear lint from behind the dryer, and check that the outside flap opens while the dryer runs. For the duct, NFPA advises a yearly cleaning of the vent pipe, by you or a dryer lint removal service; CPSC notes that clearing a blockage may mean disconnecting the duct from the dryer.
Who looks after the dryer vent in a condo building?
It depends on your building’s documents, which set what the owner looks after and what the association does. Check the association’s rules, and its rules for contractors, before you book, then tell us what you found. Condo dryer vents have their own page.
My dryer smells like something is burning. What should I do?
Stop the dryer and don’t run it again until the vent and the dryer have been checked. If the smell continues, Samsung’s support advice is to switch the dryer off at the circuit breaker and request service, and GE notes that lint built up in a vent can give off a burning smell. Smoke, fire or a smell of gas means getting everyone out and calling 911.
